Tiffany (00:01.934)
Hi Kat. How are you?
Kat (00:02.716)
Hello, Tiffany. I'm good. You can always say, like, I'm mid-cocktail and suddenly I speak with this ambiguously North Atlantic accent. Like, think I'm Cary Grant or Moira Rose or something. Anyway.
Tiffany (00:10.477)
Yeah. It's good. My favorite episodes are the ones where you had a cocktail.
Kat (00:24.614)
And then go off on a tirade. Yeah. you know.
Tiffany (00:26.158)
Yeah, this will be good for tirades because today we're talking about thrifting and the joy of it. Um, so I'm curious about some of your, uh, good finds on that you've found through thrifting. So keep that in the back of your mind, mull it over and I will ask later. I'm, yes, yes, yes, yes. Well, that's perfect. So, um,
Kat (00:34.15)
Hooray!
Kat (00:47.858)
I'm gonna talk about my mother, but yeah, okay.
Tiffany/ Greening Up My Act (00:55.832)
Apparently Gen Z is really into thrifting, which-
Kat (00:59.484)
cool because they copy everything millennials did in the late 90s, which makes perfect sense.
Greening Up My Act (01:04.184)
They totally, yes, and that is actually one of the things is like for nostalgia sake, that's like why they like it. But they're turning away from malls, so they don't copy everything. They're not going to malls. They're not doing that.
Kat (01:15.612)
Well, we just went to the mall to wander around. Like we bought like, we were just bought dip and dots and wandered around and looked and like giggled at you guys. We didn't like shop. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (01:23.616)
Yeah. And like wished we had some money. Yeah. yeah, you're totally right about that, but they're not really going to malls even just to wander. yeah, exactly. They are going to thrift stores, maybe not instead of malls, but yeah, that's like more of where they shop and actually like 83 % of Jin Z is willing to shop at thrifted or shop for thrifted stuff.
Kat (01:34.012)
That's fair. mean, you're missing out it's air conditioned for the record, but.
Greening Up My Act (01:53.292)
Which is a big portion of them.
Kat (01:53.443)
Wow. I don't even think 25 % when I was in high school were willing to do it. It's either you were forced to or you were like showing solidarity or it just made more sense. mean,
Greening Up My Act (01:58.345)
No.
Greening Up My Act (02:02.624)
Yes. Yeah, my friends and I did, but we were far from like trendsetters or cool. So it was not cool back then. It was actually kind of a little bit embarrassing. It was like becoming more trendy, but not quite there.
Kat (02:15.078)
Yeah.
Kat (02:18.96)
I think at my high school it was like the anti-trend. And so like my friends and I did it to be like, fuck that rich consumerism, you know? And some of our friends did it because they had to, but I was a little fashionista in high school. I'm not going to lie. Like I was on top of that stuff. Not anymore, but you you burn bright young, but anyway. Okay. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (02:23.756)
Mm-hmm.
Greening Up My Act (02:29.088)
Yeah, we kind of did the same thing.
Right.
Okay, nice.
Greening Up My Act (02:42.414)
Yeah, that's awesome. Yeah, well, also you have more time back then and energy. Well, energy. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Tell me about it. Tell me about it. I wore this T-shirt two days in a row, if that tells you anything.
Kat (02:48.198)
I have all the time in the world now. I just have no motivation. Who am I? I'm like, this t-shirt's fine.
Smells, smells fine. Yeah.
Kat (03:04.06)
Girl, congratulations.
Greening Up My Act (03:05.934)
It's not that dirty. Didn't do anything in it. It's fine. Yeah, that's too much. Yeah, no, I didn't even really go outside, so it's clean. It's fine. Yeah, so why is Gen Z shopping at thrift stores? A lot of it is to save money. Go figure, because they're entering.
Kat (03:09.548)
No, that's the thing is I'm like, if I slept in it, maybe I'll take it off. And like after I walked the dogs and I got sweat stains in my pits, but yeah.
I have no problem with that.
Kat (03:35.612)
They have worse job prospects than we did. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (03:36.058)
Early. Yeah, they're entering an early adulthood. When prices are skyrocketing, like I feel so bad. I feel bad for us, but I also feel bad for Jen. I feel worse for Gen Z, I think. But they also are way more interested in sustainability, so they are the ones who are like pushing for more sustainable. Like anti fashion, that type of thing.
Kat (03:49.041)
Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (04:05.286)
And they want more eco-friendly choices. So they're really pushing for that. There's also the social connection aspect of it because they, you know, only have, I mean, yeah, it's like, it's harder for them to find in-person places to shop. And they're kind of rejecting online shopping because in some ways it's not, online shopping is still doing fine. But.
Kat (04:33.104)
Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (04:34.19)
A lot of Gen Z is saying like, it's easier, this is so funny, because it's like so funny. They're rejecting online shopping because they're like, it's easier to go to the store and just try the clothes on. Yes. And decide if you like it there rather than having to wait for it to mail to you, have to ship it back.
Kat (04:49.41)
What?
Kat (04:56.7)
And send it back and now Amazon's return policies are all screwed up now. They're like, they are clamping down. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (05:00.888)
Are they? Okay, I'm not surprised because it is way too easy.
Kat (05:05.966)
It was and now it's not anymore. So you are stuck with that bathing suit in three sizes.
Greening Up My Act (05:08.195)
My god, imagine. Jesus. But it's also a little insane that that's how people shop. Because returns, we've already discovered that returns are terrible. So yeah, my god.
Kat (05:20.306)
Oh yeah, and they don't return it. Yeah. Yeah, they don't return it to the shelf. They just throw it out. So do not think that this is a sustainable way to shop.
Greening Up My Act (05:32.65)
Yeah, so it is kind of funny that they're like, it's easier to just try on. But to be fair, I freaking hate online clothes shopping. So I totally get this. Like I used to do it once in a while. And then I realized how annoying and how much it added to my burden of the things I have to do when I have to go return.
Kat (05:37.466)
I just love drawing stuff on.
Kat (05:43.634)
Me too.
Kat (05:54.151)
Like you gotta measure everything and hope that it's in centimeters and yeah. And it's never, it doesn't ever fit right.
Greening Up My Act (05:58.102)
Yeah. Yeah.
No. So, they also, Gen Z is being on TikTok and they really like to, document their finds on social media.
So, but, actually, I don't know if you've heard this, but vintage items and homemade items are like the decor choice of the Gen Z aesthetic. Yeah.
Kat (06:27.888)
Interesting. I've got a lot of homemade items from like second grade if you guys want them. There's like a
Greening Up My Act (06:32.809)
Right? Yeah. But vintage is huge with Gen Z. You see any sort of, which I love actually. But yeah, you see any sort of Gen Z who has a trendy, trendy decoration in their house. It's going to be like vintage, very, very uber vintage looking. Probably a spinoff of cottage core. I don't know. I don't know. I don't follow it closely enough, but it is really interesting.
Kat (06:37.68)
Okay. Yeah.
Kat (06:45.382)
wall art or...
Kat (06:53.958)
That's kind of cool.
Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (07:03.23)
I kind of annoying that it's like a trend, but it's fine. I'll hold that trend through the rest of my life. So, so today I want to look at the top thrifting tips and how to thrift, thrift shop more sustainably. Is thrifting getting gentrified? We'll find out. Welcome to Greening Up Hacks.
Kat (07:12.015)
Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (07:32.374)
Crap I'm gonna have to cut this because I just realized I closed my thing. Let me mark that Maybe I'll remember if not, you just have an extra little fun. Okay intro
Kat (07:43.706)
I'll just, I'll drink to that. Here's to, and you're not even the one drinking. Yeah. So here's to Tiffany running the soundboard.
Greening Up My Act (07:47.566)
Cheers. Cheers.
Greening Up My Act (08:01.582)
my God.
Kat (08:06.992)
You're drinking apple juice and I'm like three quarters of the way through a Manhattan and you're exhausted. I'm just going to say that much. This is hilarious.
Greening Up My Act (08:15.598)
Here's to Tiffany running the dee dee dee dee dee.
Greening Up My Act (08:22.284)
I'm just gonna keep that all in, because I think it's pretty funny. I had my stupid screen too far, because I'm trying to do both of these things on this screen the size of a postage stamp. I had it too far over and I couldn't see which one it was. Oy, anyway, okay. Yeah, we are.
Kat (08:23.575)
I think we should, yes. I agree. It's relatable.
Kat (08:38.342)
Hahaha
Kat (08:42.758)
We're low tech for being a podcast. We're very low tech. I don't know if you can tell by the resolution of my face here. That's not on purpose. It's just, we have very low tech equipment.
Greening Up My Act (08:50.6)
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, I actually did get a camera and it does help because mine is so old. I would have looked like I was in 1980, so.
Kat (09:04.166)
I'm going for late nineties webcam kind of stuff. Yeah, for sure. But I need, I need new equipment, but Hey, support our Patreon maybe just, get it. Seacats, Seacats pores, you know, right now I look like a young, I'm not wearing any makeup and you can't see my wrinkles, but yes. Yeah. I think you sent me even that. No, all of my girlfriends sent me that like
Greening Up My Act (09:06.87)
There you go. Yeah, there you go. That's fine. Yeah, there you go. And then you'll be able to see her, Kat's face.
Greening Up My Act (09:23.734)
You look like a young Kris Jenner. Have you heard about that?
Kat (09:32.464)
Yes, Kris Jenner looks like a newborn baby. I'm so glad they solved endometriosis. And yes, all of my friends did. We're like, we've solved all of women's problems. And now Kris Jenner can have the face of an eight-year-old baby.
Greening Up My Act (09:36.238)
yes, I think I posted that. Yes, yes, yes, yes, Yes.
Greening Up My Act (09:48.118)
It was so good. It was so good and disturbing. okay. So my sources, I looked at Martha Stewart, go figure. Right?
Kat (09:48.124)
Good for her.
Kat (09:53.765)
Yeah. Yeah.
Kat (10:03.1)
She's a queen. mean, problems abound, but she's a queen.
Greening Up My Act (10:07.118)
problems found. She had some really good tips for thrift shopping and like getting the most out of your experience. The cut talked about, I don't know if you read the cut much, they, yeah, they talk about ethical thrift shopping. And then the Seattle Times was talking about Gen Z. So that was it.
Kat (10:18.246)
Cool
Kat (10:24.315)
Used to. Yeah.
Kat (10:34.972)
That's where you got all those stats from. Seattle knows, they're at the heartbeat of the Gen Zs.
Greening Up My Act (10:36.864)
Yes. They truly are. I'm sure they are actually. so my definition of thrifting is maybe not other people's definition of thrifting because all of these articles, we're talking about thrift stores specifically. I think it's not only at a thrift store or a vintage store, although I love them. thrifting can also be something you bought a Facebook marketplace or a Craig's list.
or Poshmark or ThredUp. Yeah, anything that's been used.
Kat (11:06.224)
I feel like it's like secondhand.
But, okay, I might draw some distinctions. So this is a problem I've had in Austin. So I'm from Albuquerque, which New Mexico is the third poorest state in the union. thrifting there has a different connotation, I think, than in other places. So thrift store shopping in New Mexico is donated items that are for sale at a place that marks them down, like, so they're affordable for people to buy.
Greening Up My Act (11:15.224)
Okay.
Greening Up My Act (11:28.875)
Okay.
Greening Up My Act (11:41.112)
Okay.
Kat (11:41.267)
Vintage takes old stuff and makes it unaffordable for rich people to feel good that the item was curated. so like secondhand is not necessarily thrifting. Like for me, like going to the vintage store on East 6th here that nothing is bigger than a size two and it's all 80 bucks, that's not thrift store shopping. That's vintage.
Greening Up My Act (11:43.928)
Yeah, vintage is very different. Unaffordable. Yep.
Greening Up My Act (11:51.222)
Yeah. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (12:07.053)
Uh-huh.
Greening Up My Act (12:10.486)
Yeah, it's true.
Kat (12:11.024)
And that's different for me. It's got to be goodwill or savers or salvation army somewhere that they're not supposed to be making like money off of it. You know, this is a service that they provide.
Greening Up My Act (12:21.943)
Mm-hmm.
Greening Up My Act (12:27.426)
Even though goodwill is for profit, aren't they?
Kat (12:29.138)
I think they're a nonprofit. They've got questionable practices, but there are a number of thrift stores in Albuquerque that there was like the transgender youth supporting thrift shop that's a nonprofit and they take donations and they sell it. All the money that they make goes towards. Yeah, that's what I thought. Because they provide jobs for people who can't get jobs for their various reasons.
Greening Up My Act (12:32.333)
I would be shocked. Yeah
Greening Up My Act (12:41.294)
huh.
Greening Up My Act (12:46.968)
They are nonprofit. Sorry, go ahead.
Greening Up My Act (12:55.128)
But...
Okay, how do they sell stuff if they're not, if they're non-for-profit?
Kat (12:59.09)
their job training center.
Well, so non-profit doesn't mean that you don't make profit. Non-profit just means that you have to use all of the profits that you make to go back to a charitable cause. Basically.
Greening Up My Act (13:12.491)
Kat (13:15.206)
So when I worked...
Greening Up My Act (13:16.362)
I always just assumed that it was... I don't know how I don't know this. worked in DC for like forever.
Kat (13:20.444)
Well, there's not for profit. There's nonprofit. The idea is that they're not supposed to be making it's the business doesn't exist for the sole purpose of making a profit. Whatever profit they do make, it's reinvested into the community in some way, ideally. Yeah. And it just is a change in tax exemption status. So don't get me started on nonprofit hospitals, but anyway, there's the thing.
Greening Up My Act (13:23.571)
okay.
Greening Up My Act (13:33.044)
Okay. Interesting. Okay.
Greening Up My Act (13:45.61)
Okay. All right. So there's that. That's good. That makes me actually feel... No, it makes me feel better about Goodwill because I was always like, these prices, they're actually pretty exorbitant.
Kat (13:48.346)
Okay, I just went on my little...
Kat (13:55.411)
They are, they've gone up quite a bit, but there's supposed to be for job training purposes. They're supposed to pay the employees who can't get jobs in other places. supposedly there are a lot of issues with Goodwill, that I've read. I haven't substantiated them, so I don't know. But, but there are little thrift stores around the country that are literally thrift stores rather than vintage shops.
Greening Up My Act (13:56.951)
Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (14:02.701)
Okay.
Greening Up My Act (14:11.159)
Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (14:15.245)
Okay.
Greening Up My Act (14:21.048)
Yes.
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yeah, I totally agree, especially because the word thrift.
Kat (14:24.708)
So that differentiation is important to me.
Kat (14:30.428)
Mm-hmm.
Greening Up My Act (14:32.18)
It means don't spend a bunch of money. Yeah. Yeah. So yeah, you're totally right about that. Vintage stores. There are cheap vintage stores. there's, there's clothing stores is different, but there's like a vintage, home decor store down the road from me. it's fantastic. And they have some stuff that's overpriced.
Kat (14:34.35)
Less expensive. Yes. It means cheap. Literally. It means saving pennies. Yeah.
Kat (14:48.891)
Yeah.
Kat (14:56.029)
that's cool. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (15:01.048)
because it's sort of like a conglomeration of people. A bunch of people have stuff that they're selling there. So they all kind of price it differently. I think so. It must be. So everybody prices it differently, but sometimes you can get freaking really good deals. I'll tell you about one that I got there. I know, I know. I got one like a couple of weeks ago. So, but yeah, I think like,
Kat (15:06.569)
is it? So it's like a consignment consignment store. Yeah.
Kat (15:17.114)
man.
Greening Up My Act (15:33.794)
Okay, I don't have an exact definition of thrifting, but basically not something that's like...
Kat (15:41.572)
It's second-
Greening Up My Act (15:41.654)
It's hard to say because vintage stuff is technically more rare, whatever. Like you could argue for its value, but that's not what we're talking about. We're not talking about going and getting like a fancy dress from 1980.
Kat (15:46.883)
Yeah. Yeah. I think. Right. But. Yeah, that was owned by Kylie Jenner or whoever. Right. Or not Kylie Jenner because she wasn't in the... I'm sorry. I can't keep them straight. I don't follow them. yeah. OK, so I think we can define thrifting as secondhand, at least, items.
Greening Up My Act (15:59.17)
Right.
Yeah, well, that's fine. She was, it's a onesie. Yeah.
Kat (16:15.75)
that are sold at a more reasonable price. That's thrifting.
Greening Up My Act (16:19.638)
Yeah, yeah, and they usually are presented in a way that you have to like dig through, not curated.
Kat (16:25.788)
Yes. There, yes. Whereas Vintage is curated and overpriced generally, in my opinion. But yeah. Okay.
Greening Up My Act (16:31.061)
Mm-hmm.
Yes. Yeah. But I also think of like yard sales or estate sales as thrifting because that stuff is usually, yeah, like that's usually super marked down and you can barter.
Kat (16:39.366)
Thy would agree. Yeah.
Yeah, usually you're like, can I pay a dollar for this 1984 Louis Vuitton? don't know if Louis Vuitton exists in 1984, but yeah, you're like, look at the Chanel suit that I found for
Greening Up My Act (16:48.535)
Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (16:53.547)
Right.
Yes, yeah, my neighbors had a yard sale and we went and Charlie was with us and they were just desperate to get rid of stuff and they had like two big bags of animals like just plastic animals, plastic like old ones that their kids had played with and yeah giraffes and there were so many and I was like, oh man.
Kat (17:11.538)
Stuffed animals, plastic animals, my god, Dinosaurs and yeah.
Greening Up My Act (17:23.256)
Charlie was playing with them. I'm like, man, I don't really want these. And then basically our neighbors like forced us for free to take them because they didn't want them anymore. And they are Charlie's favorite toys. She's obsessed. Like, absolutely. And I'm so glad we have a hundred of them. Like at first I was like, God, this is so many. But now it's like, nope, we need all hundred. We absolutely, those are yes. But yeah, it's pretty good. And then like
Kat (17:33.529)
forever.
Kat (17:39.665)
Yeah.
Kat (17:44.39)
Yeah, they belong here. Yeah.
Kat (17:50.864)
I love that.
Greening Up My Act (17:52.566)
I mean, I think you could also say Freecycle or like Buy Nothing is thrifting too. Maybe. I don't know.
Kat (17:57.893)
It's the new thrifting. Yeah. Depending. mean, if it's free, is it thrifting?
Greening Up My Act (18:03.97)
I don't know, that's the question. I don't see why not.
Kat (18:10.0)
Okay, I'm going to pause it. So thrifting has an element of you're on the hunt for something. Free cycle and by nothing group are kind of serendipity. Like somebody has the thing that you need and they present it. With thrifting, you go looking for it.
Greening Up My Act (18:12.312)
huh.
Greening Up My Act (18:16.428)
Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (18:22.86)
Right.
Greening Up My Act (18:27.721)
Yeah, that's true.
Right. And then you see stuff and you're like, I could use that rather than, yeah. Although that happens in Thrift Store too. You're like, I, I could use that random saucer.
Kat (18:39.504)
it also does.
Oh my God, have to, yeah, I have got to introduce you to my, my friend. Uh, I think it's Luna Blue is her company and she, okay, we can talk about this, what she finds. She will pick stuff up at the strip store and be like, this is a 1970 art piece from an artist in Italy who only made four of these and this is worth, and she's like, it'll be in my Etsy shop. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (19:07.976)
No way.
Kat (19:10.482)
She's brilliant. asked her when my mother died, was like, how do I figure out how to sell my mom's stuff? She's like, Google images, estate sale, you know, but she knows, she knows her shit and she's so good. And we should, she's, but she finds these pieces of art that I'd be like, that looked like trash to me, but it's worth like hundreds of dollars, know, that somebody just died and their kids donated everything to Goodwill. And there it is, it's a thrift store.
Greening Up My Act (19:11.572)
That's amazing.
Greening Up My Act (19:18.102)
Yes.
Greening Up My Act (19:24.568)
That's amazing.
Greening Up My Act (19:40.878)
That's insane. Wow. That's a meet. That's actually me. I would love to meet her.
Kat (19:41.106)
for a buck 25. Yeah. yeah. I will share her Instagram with you.
Greening Up My Act (19:48.974)
Yeah, I do. okay. So actually I wanted to talk about my greatest thrifted finds now. Okay. So one of them was I got like eight years ago or something. I don't still have it because it hurt my back. Um, but my antique desk and it was gorgeous. I got it for a hundred dollars from Facebook marketplace. And it was just like, it was one of those desks that had the top part.
Kat (19:54.821)
Yeah, let's hear it.
Greening Up My Act (20:18.954)
like a top lip that had drawers and it was had like a stamp of some kind of manufacturer that made it back in God knows when and yeah it was just it was a beautiful beautiful desk but like I said I couldn't actually work from it because it hurt my back like crazy it wasn't like the right I don't know how people people didn't sit at their desk for eight hours a day when they when they were using this so well that too
Kat (20:31.84)
I love desks,
Kat (20:36.654)
Yeah, you're like...
Kat (20:42.476)
Also, they weren't taller than five foot two. So yeah, they didn't get milk as children.
Greening Up My Act (20:51.229)
So that was one of my favorites though, because I got it for $100 and the woman said she gave it to me because she had a bunch of people who wanted it. Yeah, and I was like the nice one because people were just being like, me want, give me. Yes. Yes.
Kat (21:00.602)
asking for it.
Kat (21:05.83)
There's something about the soul find. There is something to be said for that. Which I feel like thrifting affords that opportunity that buying from Tarjay does not.
Greening Up My Act (21:18.446)
Oh yeah, totally. That's why it's so, yeah, and you just feel like there's a history to it that, a history and a quality that just isn't gonna be there.
Kat (21:30.288)
Yeah, that ye- yeah. It's like you're joining the ranks of the people who have had the honor of owning this item. Which is weird.
Greening Up My Act (21:39.476)
Mm-hmm. And it's also not giving up noxious fumes that like California band would tell you about. Uh-huh. Yeah.
Kat (21:45.327)
Yeah, it's not IKEA shelving and yeah. I, yeah, there's something to be said for I there's a lot of good hardwood furniture that my mother had collected or took from my grandparents that I don't want to lose, but I don't have room for it and
Greening Up My Act (22:08.11)
I know it's hard. It's really hard.
Kat (22:11.954)
Do want to hear the best thrifting story from my mother's archives? So you, she used to go thrifting with Gloria, Gloria Bentley. I don't think you'll ever listen to my podcast. I love you. You're a delightful woman. My mom would collect specific items and they lived in Northern Virginia, DC for a while, which is a prime place to go thrifting because rich people just throw shit away. Um, so my mom and Gloria Bentley would go, uh,
Greening Up My Act (22:16.245)
Absolutely.
Greening Up My Act (22:30.989)
Mm-hmm.
Kat (22:42.002)
thrifting in Northern Virginia at even the Goodwills were just chock full of great stuff. Everything my mom would collect, like she collected blue depression glass and Gloria collected every other color of depression glass. Like she had a, the second bedroom in their apartment was just full of things my mom collected just one piece at a time. Whereas Gloria collected 15 pieces at a time, but they were at a Goodwill in Northern Virginia somewhere and
Greening Up My Act (22:46.669)
Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (23:05.675)
Wow.
Kat (23:11.388)
Gloria picked up this horribly ugly corn husk doll. Have you ever seen a corn husk doll? They're a doll made of corn husk. Yes. Okay.
Greening Up My Act (23:17.454)
Yeah, I've made one. Yeah, yeah, I made them at like pioneer land or whatever.
Kat (23:21.926)
Yes, horribly ugly. And my mom was like.
Gloria, what are you? It was $1.50. My mom was like, Gloria, what are you doing this corn husk doll? And Gloria's just like, shut up, Mary Ann. She buys it for $1.50. They get out into the parking lot and Gloria turns the corn husk doll over and shreds it to bits and reveals it is stuffed with $100 bills. Yes. Some depression era woman had hidden their money in the corn husk doll.
Greening Up My Act (23:45.61)
No way.
How did she?
Kat (23:56.249)
and when they died and gave it to Goodwill and like, look this ugly doll. It's like full of money. So anyway, now turn those ugly corn husk dolls over and look.
Greening Up My Act (24:01.838)
my god.
And so Gloria had seen this before.
Kat (24:08.914)
Gloria. Gloria found the money. Gloria was brilliant. Gloria is a brilliant woman. She is.
Greening Up My Act (24:16.31)
That's amazing. That is genius. She's like, shut up. I'm getting this doll.
Kat (24:18.546)
Yes. But that's just shut up, Mary Ann. It's a dollar fifty. Mom was like, that is the ugliest thing I've ever seen. She's like, don't pay more than a buck twenty five. She's like, Mary Ann, I'm paying a buck fifty.
Greening Up My Act (24:26.894)
you
Kat (24:33.98)
But my mom, she would buy, she would find things at these surf stores in Northern Virginia and it would be like a Chanel jacket.
Greening Up My Act (24:34.327)
Hey
Kat (24:45.02)
that didn't really fit me, but you know, it was $10 and it's worth 200, you know, or she bought me a fur coat, which I don't believe in the fur trade. This fur coat was probably from 1970. I still have it. It is shedding because it has not been, and it is like,
Greening Up My Act (24:48.55)
Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (24:58.545)
huh. Yeah.
Uhhh
Kat (25:07.634)
Who knows what animals it was made of. It was probably really great in 1970. It is a hooker coat. Okay. I'm sorry. I know we're not supposed to say hooker, but it is a 1970s hooker coat, but it had gloves in the pockets, like a little, they do, they fit over two of my fingers. These gloves did, but that it was a $5 coat. You know, I have worn it to New Year's Eve in New York city because it was freaking freezing and
Greening Up My Act (25:10.158)
Okay, uh-huh.
Greening Up My Act (25:23.128)
Wow.
Kat (25:37.245)
Fur works, I'm sorry. I would never purposefully buy any fur, but this $5 coat from my mother I can't get rid of. It's raccoon and possum, I don't even know. But it was probably a designer coat at some point. And it was a little too small for me and the gloves were definitely too small for me, but it has kept me warm in ways that only a Viking, you know, throw can. So.
Greening Up My Act (25:39.186)
huh.
Greening Up My Act (25:43.553)
Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (25:48.014)
I
Greening Up My Act (26:04.376)
That's amazing.
Kat (26:07.088)
My mom is a really good thrift shopper.
Greening Up My Act (26:09.324)
That's awesome. I love it. Yeah, I love that so much. It is a skill. It's a real skill.
Kat (26:16.764)
my mom would label the good silverware that I have is Oneida. My mom knows the pattern. She wrote it down. I have the little card in my thing. She bought it all at thrift stores and it's worth a couple hundred bucks. And yeah, I have two sets of good silverware that my mother put together for me in college.
Greening Up My Act (26:20.457)
huh.
Greening Up My Act (26:29.586)
she just like pieced it together? Whoa.
Greening Up My Act (26:41.582)
That's awesome. Do you have to polish it?
Kat (26:43.962)
No, it's not real silver. I mean, this is everyday silver, but it's patterns that matter, you know, that would have cost money that my mom got them for. I got them for free because my mom gave them to me, but my mom paid $10 for. Yeah. My mom was a thrifter. and she just had excellent taste was the thing. She could spot things and be like, that's worth money. She knew. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (26:47.476)
okay, okay, okay.
Greening Up My Act (26:52.118)
Yeah. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (26:59.81)
That's amazing. That is so cool.
Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (27:10.546)
Wow, that's what I was reading. I mean, I have tips later, but I was reading like, no, it's fine. Pick stuff up. Like that's one thing you can do is like, is it heavy? Is it like, you can kind of tell if something's like solid.
Kat (27:17.872)
Yeah. Look at it. Is there a mark? That's always a thing. Like, always look for the mark on the bottom.
Greening Up My Act (27:26.934)
Yes. Yeah. And it also says like, like kind of know your marks. Like, if you, if you want, no, no, if you like want to get really into it, then you can, there are certain marks like, what's the crystal Westinghouse is that it? Anyway, some kind of, some kind of crystal, have like a specific mark that they always leave on their stuff. And this woman was saying she found like two.
Kat (27:34.118)
Yeah, I'm sorry I'm examining the things in my house. Yeah.
Kat (27:47.292)
That's one of them. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (27:56.814)
crystal lamps that were like, you super cheap. And just, it's just cause she knew that that little mark should be there. So yeah, so it's really interesting. I don't know if I'll ever get that into it, but maybe, maybe once my invasive plants are gone and I have time, I don't know.
Kat (28:02.79)
Mark meant something. Yeah.
Kat (28:11.524)
I can't. Yeah, right. I just don't have it in me to collect stuff anymore, but.
Greening Up My Act (28:19.198)
Yeah, that's the other thing. But if it's like a lamp or something practical that I'm replacing my like shitty target lamps, then like great. Yeah, yeah, totally.
Kat (28:27.462)
or piece of furniture sometimes. Yeah. Like my filing cabinet from West Elm. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (28:33.864)
Mm-hmm. Yep. Yep. Yep. Man filing cabinets are so expensive new and so cheap they're at the restore has like 1 million of them and they're Yeah, and they're like 10 bucks and you can paint them and then voila You don't spend $250 or whatever the hell they want Yeah Yeah, which is fine who locks it
Kat (28:40.444)
Ridonculous. yeah.
They're like, please take our filing cabinets. Yeah.
Kat (28:57.136)
Yeah, they might not have the key that you need, but who's breaking into your house and going through your refining? Yeah. Who locks a filing cabinet?
Greening Up My Act (29:02.89)
Yeah, I don't I would never lock it because it's in my house. Yeah. Also, there's nothing in that drawer. So it's like extra postcards. Yeah. Yep. another thing I found recently. this. Did I tell you about my Adirondack chairs?
Kat (29:09.01)
I know I'm like yeah good luck have fun in there. ex I know so many extra postcards Tiffany. I gotta start mailing shit.
Kat (29:28.719)
No.
Greening Up My Act (29:30.23)
This was recent. This is my most recent thrifted find. So we just put in a mulched area around our fire pit out in our backyard.
Kat (29:41.754)
You did talk about, I am completely jealous about. There's been a bunch of downed branches in our neighborhood and I would be like, shut.
Kat (29:50.415)
Anyway, but.
Greening Up My Act (29:51.124)
Yes, yes, I know we got so lucky. There's still a big pile in our driveway that we need to like, we need to like spread it out. Yeah. But yeah, so we did that. And I was like, I really want Adirondack chairs. I really want Adirondack chairs. But I looked them up and knew they're like 300 bucks each. Yeah. Yes. And I
Kat (29:58.503)
We'll send it here. Ship it to Texas. Good luck.
Kat (30:15.794)
Good ones, not the plastic ones at Home Depot. Which are still like $40 for these shitty plastic ones that break in two weeks, but yeah, yeah.
Greening Up My Act (30:22.644)
Yes, I know. And I was getting desperate because I was looking all over Facebook marketplace, looking, looking, looking, and everybody was snatching up anything that looked decent within seconds because it's like that season. Everybody's looking for Adirondack chairs. Yeah. So I almost got so desperate that I almost bought four plastic, not even Adirondack shaped chairs, shitty chairs for 40 bucks. And I was like, there were dirty. I was just like, God damn it.
Kat (30:34.758)
Yeah, it's time for outdoor chairs, yeah.
Kat (30:47.371)
blah.
Greening Up My Act (30:51.436)
So I was just, I was so desperate, but finally these two came up and they were, they looked really rough, like really chipped. They looked, but the guy was like, they're solid, they're in good shape, whatever. So nobody was snatching them up because they looked so bad. So I was like, give me those and they were wooden. yeah, so was 40 bucks for two wooden chairs. We drove like 45 minutes to get them.
Kat (31:14.29)
I'd that's huge.
Greening Up My Act (31:21.246)
We got them and the guy wasn't even home. He was like, I'm running late. So was like, can I sneak into your backyard? Cause we're on a time crunch. I just like broke into his backyard and then Ben mode him. so, so yeah. And then I spent like days, like a full, probably a full week sanding them down, painting them, making, I like, I
Kat (31:28.012)
yeah. We got places to be. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (31:44.576)
Went to the hardware. This was like such an adventure. I went to the hardware store or a local ACE hardware store and the guy was like so into paint. Like so into paint. He was quoting studies about different paint brands and like this kind does this blah blah blah. Like he knew everything about paint. And so finally he was like never, never.
Kat (31:52.53)
He's like, I know everything. I know everything. Yeah.
Kat (32:05.564)
Home Depot would never. They couldn't hire someone that good. Okay. what a gem. Okay.
Greening Up My Act (32:11.958)
I know and I was like anytime I have any questions about paint I'm coming back to you. But yeah so he was trying to convince me to sand everything down like sand all the paint off and I was like I'm telling you man I don't have time I got a cookout this weekend I gotta go so he's like okay here's next best option so I like yeah
Kat (32:30.758)
Thank God he had an x-pix option. mean, some people are like, you can't, I won't even speak to you anymore because you got a standard job.
Greening Up My Act (32:36.494)
He was disappointed, but he's like, well, okay. Yeah. Yeah. And so I got the paint he recommended, painted them and they look so good. And I just like tightened the screws and they're perfectly stable now. I added some wood fill on like a couple of small spots that were, and they're great. They're perfect. They're beautiful. I'll send you pictures. Um, but it all in, was $90 for both with paint and supplies. I know. I know at least.
Kat (32:39.236)
If you must, if you must.
Kat (33:00.786)
That's nothing for andorotoxin. They'd be $400 for two. Especially like legit wood. Yeah. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (33:07.308)
Yeah, at least, probably more than that. So I was just like, damn, I feel so proud of myself right now. So that was my big one. But then like most of Charlie's clothes are thrifted, which is so good. Yeah, they just get stains on them. Yeah. Just like ruined instantly. She's just over there smearing ketchup all over it.
Kat (33:20.594)
Especially when they're little, because they grow out of them like immediately. Yeah, that too. It's just it's like, yeah. I mean, I know it's especially with little girls, it's fun to like buy them tutus and sequin shoes, but it's like, you can.
Greening Up My Act (33:34.925)
Mm-hmm.
But you can get that thrifted. Yeah, that's, I just got her a unicorn dress thrifted, three bucks, you know? Yeah. I have a blazer with, that's like black and white gingham and it's my favorite blazer. It's actually the only one I own, but I love it. For like 10, not even $10, probably five or eight. So yeah, I've just had such, it's so fun. It's so fun.
Kat (33:45.522)
Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (34:06.156)
I've got my sister in line to it too. so some thrifting tips after we take a break. about that? Yeah. All right. Sweet.
Kat (34:08.261)
Awesome.
Kat (34:16.356)
Okay, yeah, it's been 35 minutes. Let's take a break. I'm into it.
Greening Up My Act (34:34.542)
Alright, cool. So I have maybe six or seven thrifting tips that I found. A lot of them, what? You might, a lot of them, like I was really trying to find the good ones online. A lot of them were like.
Kat (34:41.522)
All right, I'll see if I might have extras. I might have extras to give you. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (34:53.23)
I don't know, just like really obvious. Like, go.
Kat (34:58.61)
seasonally.
Greening Up My Act (35:00.486)
Yeah, I don't know. I found it. Most of the tips very annoying. I can't even think of one that was annoying right now, but I found Martha Stewart pulled through. Mm hmm. I don't think she wrote it, but her staff is good.
Kat (35:08.08)
Yeah. I mean, okay, Martha Stewart, she's brilliant. I mean, she might be a
Kat (35:17.298)
She's brilliant for thinking of it. She's zeitgeist-y. I mean, I don't know. She might be an evil genius. She's rich, of course. have-
Greening Up My Act (35:20.046)
Yeah. Yeah. Totally. Uh huh. Uh huh.
Kat (35:27.452)
things to say about rich people, but she's pretty smart.
Greening Up My Act (35:29.198)
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, she's, she's been through a lot too, to be fair. Um, so, okay. So I'll start and you add in any that you have. But one thing that I liked was always pull over. So if you see a yard sale or if you see an estate sale or whatever, just be willing to turn around. get, yeah.
Kat (35:51.676)
Yeah, you never know. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (35:54.706)
And I don't do this because I usually have Charlie, although Charlie would not care, but we're usually like on it. Skeleti-in-a-sort of skeletons. Wouldn't that be amazing? She would love them. She would play with them forever.
Kat (35:59.965)
She'd find a hundred dinosaur skeletons.
Kat (36:08.082)
There's a human skull in here. Cool, cool. Cool, cool.
Greening Up My Act (36:13.217)
It would be, I don't know if you've seen that meme, there was a little girl probably about her age that became obsessed with their Halloween skeleton and they took it everywhere. So good, they took it to like restaurants and it was so great. Yeah, this is my brother. I can so see that happening, kids are nuts.
Kat (36:23.931)
my god.
Kat (36:28.294)
I think I have, yeah, yeah. She's like, this is Billy. man. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (36:40.288)
So, and then like keep, you know, 20 bucks in cash in your wallet at all times, just in case, just in case. arrive if it's like a thrift store, right? Yard sale, this counts too, but arrive right after opening in case they put stuff out overnight. next tip, try on clothing because a lot of the stuff that is sent to thrift stores is sent there for a reason.
Kat (36:47.186)
That's fair.
Kat (37:09.874)
Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (37:11.488)
So, yes.
Kat (37:12.434)
sniff the pits my friends, sniff the pits. Another tip, they do not wash them, they spray them with Febreze. wash it when you get it home, but yeah. They do not wash them.
Greening Up My Act (37:19.471)
gross. Well, yeah, I ffff... Gross, Yuck.
I guess where would they wash all those clothes? They don't have like a commercial laundry facility in the back of their thrift store.
Kat (37:30.82)
Yeah, they don't have it. Yeah. Back- backwards tip before you donate stuff, wash it, please.
Greening Up My Act (37:40.47)
Yeah, yeah, that's nice. One of the women said, because for this article they interviewed like three thrifting experts. I'm like, how do you become a thrifting expert? Yeah, I know. I know. I want to be that though. She says she wears skirts with tights to be able to try like pants on really quickly in the aisle.
Kat (37:43.122)
Mm.
Kat (37:52.933)
my god, can't wait for that certification on my resume.
Kat (38:05.67)
That's smart. mean, so for a lot of the thrift stores in Austin, like they don't have enough staff to watch the, try on rooms. So they just have them closed. And so you just have to like, yes. Yeah. That's smart. That's a smart way to go thrifting. Or they were closed for COVID or yeah.
Greening Up My Act (38:16.863)
Mm-hmm.
Right. Interesting. Yeah. She said her kid. Right. Right. Yeah. She said it enormously embarrasses her kids when she does that, but I'm like, that's genius.
Kat (38:34.758)
I, it makes, I, I, we thrift store shop for red dresses or whatever we need for the hash because we do a lot of dress runs. And so it's just, it goes over the, whatever Sean's wearing, cause he has to wear a red dress. goes, and if it's like, if you can zip it up the back with a shirt on, it'll fit. So we do a lot of that. A lot of trying clothes on in the
Greening Up My Act (38:43.98)
Mm-hmm.
Greening Up My Act (38:55.338)
Yes.
Greening Up My Act (38:59.22)
Yeah, that's awesome. I went to one where I tried on blazers, that same blazer that I got actually. And it was, it's sort of like a curated thrift store and the vibes are off. No, no, it's bad because twice I've been in there and twice I felt uncomfortable. The first time I felt uncomfortable was because I was trying this blazer on in the aisle instead of going into the dressing room and people were staring at me as if I was nuts. That's why was like, I'm not getting naked.
Kat (39:09.437)
okay, that's kind of nice. see, that's a problem.
Kat (39:24.496)
It's a frickin' blazer. That's how you try a jacket on. Yeah. This is in a private moment and I'm not gonna frickin' steal your ten dollar blazer. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (39:28.682)
Yeah! I was like, not taking my shirt off.
Right. Yes, it was like several employees came over and they're like, can we help you? I'm like, can you go away? That's how you can help me And then yeah, and then another time Charlie was there with me and she was really little and she was kind of like she was old enough to walk she was probably two and a half or something, but she was crawling on the floor kind of like pretending to be a little baby and
Kat (39:42.706)
The answer is no, you cannot.
Greening Up My Act (40:00.522)
They, the woman was like, I don't know if I let her crawl on the floor. We don't really clean it that much. And the woman, that was a woman working and I was like, okay. I mean, that was annoying, but I was like, fine. it's also like my choice, but anyway, and then this. Yeah. And then this older woman next to me turned and she's like, you can't let her crawl on the floor. She's going to get an infection. And I was like, an infection.
Kat (40:15.932)
She needs an immunity boost, okay babe? Yeah.
Kat (40:28.454)
Wow.
Greening Up My Act (40:29.942)
Like, I don't think she's gonna get an infection. This place is...
Kat (40:32.344)
Of what? What? Have you sprayed the place down with MRSA? What kind of infection? Is this hepatitis C central? I didn't know. Yeah, like, ooh. Wow, an infection. That's...
Greening Up My Act (40:40.694)
Are there needles laying everywhere? Yeah. Yeah, so I don't go back there. And it's too bad because they do have decent clothes, but it's also it's a little too trendy for me.
Kat (40:51.546)
Yeah, see that's, that's a thing. All I want out of a thrift store is for general sizes. Ideally, if they have the time color separation works really good for me. Cause usually I'm like, I need a yellow dress. have a yellow dress in mind. Let me see your four yellow dresses in the size that I need. And if that's the way I want, I will buy it. Cause I hunt. I do not shop. I hunt. I know what I'm looking for.
Greening Up My Act (40:58.157)
Yes.
Greening Up My Act (41:04.279)
huh. Yeah.
Yes.
Greening Up My Act (41:12.023)
huh.
Greening Up My Act (41:16.206)
Yeah.
Yes. Yes.
Kat (41:22.578)
colors, that's I mean my own closet is in...
Greening Up My Act (41:27.396)
wow.
Kat (41:28.134)
Well, it used to be until my boyfriend moved in, but when my head, when my head is in the right place, my closet is in length.
Greening Up My Act (41:30.838)
No, that's impressive. huh.
Kat (41:38.641)
Well, purpose, length, because, you know, some of the long dresses can't go with it. So like I have business clothes over here, all like shirts, short things, shirts. have work shirts and jackets, you know, and then dresses and they're all in color order, ideally.
Greening Up My Act (41:44.695)
Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (41:59.16)
Dang, you are an order Muppet at heart.
Kat (42:03.26)
But right now it doesn't look that way. Right now it's a... yeah.
Greening Up My Act (42:04.98)
I know, but that's okay. It's not your fault. No, because mine is chaos. My closet is chaos. well, I tried, what is it? I think Marie Kondo's idea was length. Oops. So it was like from short to long. That didn't work. I just immediately was like, ugh.
Kat (42:10.492)
You should try it, just try color. Color, just.
Kat (42:19.079)
Yes.
That I can't do. don't think of... The only reason I do long dresses over here is because I store my big suitcase and the long dresses can't go above the big suitcase. That's the only thing. You have to store them in what you think of them as. So the black dress, the green dress, that works for me. I think in color. I think I have four black dresses. I have two green dresses.
Greening Up My Act (42:31.123)
huh. Yep. Yep. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (42:39.585)
Okay.
Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (42:46.673)
huh.
Greening Up My Act (42:52.417)
Yeah.
Kat (42:52.432)
I know that I have one long green dress and one short green dress and I know I have a red shirt and a yellow shirt and a rainbow shirt button down. If I can just know their size, but first their color and then their size. Well, maybe it's the opposite. Maybe it's their size and then their color. Then I can find them. Otherwise I'm just like, should I give that away?
Greening Up My Act (42:56.479)
Mm-hmm.
Greening Up My Act (43:08.462)
Mm-hmm.
Greening Up My Act (43:12.865)
Okay.
Right. Okay. Now that's really interesting.
Kat (43:19.858)
Try separating things into length and color.
Greening Up My Act (43:23.916)
I need to reorganize my closet anyway. That's like, okay. Okay. I'll try. My closet reorganization is coming. It needs to happen. So yeah.
Kat (43:29.724)
And then also.
costumes.
Like they all go in this office closet because we are the hash. And so I have, cannot keep storing the onesies.
Greening Up My Act (43:40.813)
huh.
Greening Up My Act (43:46.839)
you
Kat (43:46.854)
too many grackle onesies why do I keep out I have so many onesies I give those away a lot but the Superman onesie went away
Greening Up My Act (43:50.568)
my God. That is so funny. You don't, apparently. We do have one onesie in this house that's for adults, but... so... that's adorable. Yeah, okay. So try on your clothing, for sure. Check racks near the dressing room because sometimes...
Kat (43:55.696)
She never know when you're gonna need a onesie. Anyway.
Kat (44:04.37)
I've got a Care Bear and a Leopard and a Graggle. That's my collection currently. Anyway, sorry.
Kat (44:19.506)
people just throw shit back on it.
Greening Up My Act (44:21.428)
Yeah, and those are like, that's a good thing, but maybe it doesn't fit right. So it's like, that might be where the best stuff is. Go in with a plan, like you. But be willing to waiver if you find something awesome.
Kat (44:31.376)
Hunting,
I mean, yes, if you find that perfect blazer that you never knew you needed. Yes. That's, I have definitely gone in with Sean hunting for shirts and ended up with the Audrey Hepburn dress in my dreams. So yeah.
Greening Up My Act (44:40.49)
Yes. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (44:47.95)
nice. That's awesome. So and you can also avoid overwhelm by like knowing which sections you want to look at. Like, OK, am I going to look at clothes or am I going to look at housing stuff? Because I'm not going to do both. Yeah, yes.
Kat (45:00.156)
Yeah, you can't do both on the same day. I can't look at tops generally.
I can't. The for some reason shirts, I could well overwhelm me. I can look at dresses. Also, I only wear dresses. That helps. Denim, denim also, I want to set on fire, but yeah.
Greening Up My Act (45:09.325)
Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (45:16.575)
Okay, that makes sense.
Yeah. And then, oh yeah, like you kind of mentioned, use Google lens to reverse image search. So you can find items of value that way, which is pretty cool. I've never tried it, like I said, but I think it's a good idea. Um, yeah. So one of these articles, the cut, think interviewed seller and founder of a Luchi vintage in Dallas. Her name is Cynthia Lozier.
Kat (45:37.04)
It helps.
Greening Up My Act (45:50.375)
she says, so anyway, sorry, didn't, I didn't introduce this topic. We're talking about gentrification.
Kat (45:55.731)
Yes, okay. I want to one more tip. Learn the color coding at your thrift store for what the things mean. Yes. Because like yellow tags, red tags, blue tags means something else. Hunt for things in the wrong season because they will be trying to get rid of them.
Greening Up My Act (46:00.706)
Yes, please.
Greening Up My Act (46:04.462)
Mmm, for sales. Yes.
Greening Up My Act (46:11.729)
huh.
Greening Up My Act (46:16.704)
Yeah. For example, my fricking Adirondack chairs. Wrong season. Yeah. Yeah, totally.
Kat (46:22.032)
Yeah. Yeah. Hunt for those in the winter. Yeah. Buy stuff in the off season, like coats. If they have them at Goodwill in the spring, buy them then, you know, prom dresses look for an October, you know, like go the opposite. I mean, obviously they're not going to sell Christmas stuff in the middle of June. They will. will. But if you, yeah, look, be prepared for off.
Greening Up My Act (46:29.175)
Mm-hmm.
Greening Up My Act (46:36.109)
Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (46:39.683)
Mm-hmm.
Greening Up My Act (46:44.715)
they will in July. You don't. Don't worry.
Kat (46:52.518)
look in the offseason. yeah, anyway.
Greening Up My Act (46:53.646)
Yeah, I found all of my decor, all of our Christmas decor almost from either Salvation Army or Freecycle. And I feel like I'm pretty, like I don't like to decorate too much and I feel like I'm pretty good to go. So yeah, I don't need anything else. Yeah. Right. Yeah. So.
Kat (47:02.608)
Nice.
Kat (47:08.198)
Yeah, that's awesome.
Yeah. Anyway, okay. Yes. So gentrification of yeah, okay. Let's rail against the vintage bitches.
Greening Up My Act (47:22.986)
So anyway, yeah, this owner of this vintage store says anyone thrifting long enough would agree that thrift stores are getting gentrified. This gentrification leads to an increase in prices, which, yeah, sorry, I'll finish the quote before I go off on a tangent, making it more difficult for low income earners to access affordable clothing. So gentrification for anybody who's unfamiliar with the term, because that is very possible, is basically, God, how do you define it?
Kat (47:51.315)
It is the moving in of rich people into spaces that were previously inhabited by less wealthy people, usually white people.
Greening Up My Act (48:00.138)
Yeah, and it pushes the less wealthy people out of spaces that they usually occupied. Yeah, totally. Stupid mics, we keep hitting them. So yeah, right. So what do do if you are shopping for the thrill of acquiring large quantities of clothing for dirt cheap rather than out of necessity? It's time to reconsider.
Kat (48:02.759)
Yes.
Yes.
Kat (48:14.194)
Do you need a Manhattan, my dear?
Kat (48:26.674)
Yes.
Greening Up My Act (48:27.454)
Overconsumption is totally a thing even with rifting.
Kat (48:30.522)
Yes, that the song, poppin tags, whatever, by Macklemore that came out, that was supposed to be kind of like, whatever, it smells like piss, but it was 99 cents and it's still an anthem to over consumption. Right. That's the, the kind of irony of it is that he's singing about like, yeah, I can buy cool shit at the thrift store, but it's like, you're still, you don't need it. You know, you're not
Greening Up My Act (48:35.955)
right. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (48:44.663)
Yes.
Greening Up My Act (48:58.323)
huh.
Kat (48:58.898)
thoughtfully consuming. And that's the thing. If you're walking in to see how much you can get for $10 and you're like, I have 40 t-shirts, do you need 40 t-shirts? No, no one needs 40 t-shirts, you know.
Greening Up My Act (49:09.454)
Yes, totally. That's actually the perfect example. But even at the kids thrift store that I go to, they have some sales that are like 20 onesies for a dollar or something, because they're just so desperate to get rid of them. I'm like, I wouldn't have ever needed 20 onesies.
Kat (49:30.142)
I maybe I mean I always heard that that was something that newborns needed because they just shit their pants all the time. Maybe for like little okay maybe you just because you're just like you're only doing yeah yeah.
Greening Up My Act (49:36.66)
Yeah, it's true. Yeah.
If you're starting with zero, but you get so many from family and friends, it's like you're never gonna start with zero. So 20 is insane. And then you have to store all those. anyway.
Kat (49:48.004)
Yeah. Yeah. Well, and that's just the thing is everybody gives them and then they donate them. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (49:56.662)
Yeah, totally, totally. And they're in newborn clothes for maybe like, some kids are like a day. And then you're like, well, shit, I have all these clothes and she never even used. So also buy practical pieces. So use a similar vein, but use thrifting to fill gaps in your wardrobe rather than film or share thrifting halls with others. Because I actually watch, there is a woman I watch on Instagram and I don't watch much of this, but.
Kat (50:05.2)
Laters. Yeah. Yeah.
Kat (50:18.715)
Yeah, yeah.
Greening Up My Act (50:26.016)
She shares thrifting hauls and she has so much shit that she brings home. And I'm just like, I know you're not gonna wear all that, because you're just like over and over and over. It's like a hundred things.
Kat (50:36.242)
There's something about like snatching it out of the mouth of somebody else too, you know? It's like because often in thrifting it's a unique piece because it would or you know
Greening Up My Act (50:40.919)
Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (50:46.541)
Mm-hmm
Kat (50:51.538)
Do you really need it? You know, like...
Greening Up My Act (50:52.864)
Yeah. And this woman seems very rich, so I don't follow her anymore. She annoyed me about something else, but.
Kat (50:58.768)
I mean, yeah, display consumerism. I have issues with
Greening Up My Act (51:05.422)
Another thing is steer clear of sections like work wear like suits, blazers, dresses or dress pants I mean. School uniforms or scrubs when you're putting together like a Halloween costume. So don't go there and like take scrubs. Yeah, exactly. Because people go there to buy them. Yeah. Yeah, for work. Yeah. Yeah.
Kat (51:20.918)
Because somebody else will need it. Yeah from the people who actually need it. Yeah, that's really thoughtful. Yeah
That makes sense.
Greening Up My Act (51:32.398)
And then consider participating in clothing swaps with friends trading with family or donating your own gently worn pieces to places that could use them. So instead of just buying, you could also give like good stuff.
Kat (51:43.662)
You were, yeah. Well, you were saying you had a friend who considered like she just rented stuff from Goodwill, right?
Greening Up My Act (51:50.402)
Yeah, that wasn't a friend, that was on Instagram, I think I saw. Yeah.
Kat (51:55.027)
Yeah, which like, yeah, okay. This was a thing. I wore it. I'm to wash it, give it to Goodwill so they can sell it again. And it was still cheaper than buying it from Target or wherever for $30. It was $5, but Goodwill can make money off of it again and give somebody else a job and you know.
Greening Up My Act (52:01.448)
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (52:15.2)
Yeah. And actually that was like, wasn't clothing. was, holiday, platters. Yeah. Yeah. Like, uh-huh. Yeah. Totally. and then consider, consider volunteering your time and donating money and gently worn clothes to continue the cycle. So you can contribute to these surf stores in more ways than just like shopping.
Kat (52:21.606)
Holiday decor. Okay, platters. Okay. But it makes sense with the clothing too, but yeah.
Kat (52:43.408)
And I would say an addendum to that is find a local thrift store that supports a charity you believe in. Cause goodwill and salvation army are two that are big. They have their own problems cause they're corporations. mean, at the end of the day, corporations with great power comes great responsibility and large corporations typically don't handle things as well. for instance, like
Greening Up My Act (52:51.798)
Yes.
Greening Up My Act (53:00.621)
Mm-hmm.
Greening Up My Act (53:08.673)
Yeah.
Kat (53:10.798)
the transgender research center in New Mexico, you know, there are places that are small scale thrift stores, consider donating to them and buying from them because their dollars actually go to help specific causes that you care about, you know, and do a little research on your thrift stores. there are some conglomerates out there that maybe offer cheap options to people, but don't necessarily treat their workers well or
Greening Up My Act (53:18.22)
Yes.
Greening Up My Act (53:39.619)
Mm-hmm.
Kat (53:40.103)
You know, if you are a gentrifying force, like if you have enough money to buy non-thrift things and you buy through things, like be conscious about it. Cause some people, some people can't afford to go to Target and spend twice as much on a t-shirt or to order off Amazon. Some people have to go to the thrift store and spend as little as they can.
Greening Up My Act (53:44.631)
Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (53:50.402)
Mm-hmm.
Kat (54:04.21)
Yeah. I don't know. I've, yeah, I love thrifting. I've always loved thrifting, but it-
It is interesting how it gets kind of taken over by like the consumerist, how much I could get for $50, you know? Yeah. Do you really need that? Or are you taking a prom dress out of the hands of a girl who really couldn't afford a new prom dress, you know?
Greening Up My Act (54:20.832)
Yeah, it really bothers me too.
Greening Up My Act (54:29.568)
Yeah, and I'm just making content from it and then probably throwing it away. Who knows? That I'm just thinking of the one woman, but we're just not not using it. Yeah, it's just so annoying.
Kat (54:34.139)
Yeah.
Kat (54:38.396)
Judge away, my friend. Yeah, only buy clothing that you need, you know? When you need it. Yeah. I love it. We should go thru it sometime. I wish we could take my mother. My mother had such a good eye. She could find the most amazing. I mean, for instance, I'm pretty sure this, like I said, these coupe glasses, they're a set. I think my mother found.
Greening Up My Act (54:44.458)
Mm-hmm. Yeah, whether thrifted or not.
Greening Up My Act (54:51.82)
I know.
Greening Up My Act (55:02.287)
yeah, you did say that.
Kat (55:07.056)
somewhere in Northern Virginia. Coop glasses? Eight. Eight. And water glasses and iced tea glasses.
Greening Up My Act (55:07.99)
Is it two or four or eight or 12? How many do you have? Okay. Damn.
Damn, and it's all the same? It's all a set? Wow. That's pretty incredible, actually.
Kat (55:22.252)
And yeah, and.
espresso cups. mean, my mother had a good eye, you know, and she, okay, that's another thing. If you want good shit, go to the Goodwill's in the rich neighborhoods.
Greening Up My Act (55:28.012)
Wow. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (55:36.33)
Yeah, I know. Although I'm in pretty rich neighborhood and our goodwill is garbage. Our Salvation Army's okay. But yeah, I don't know why it's not better. Yeah.
Kat (55:45.062)
You got to find out where the rich people are donating their stuff. I think maybe that Goodwill has more equitable distribution centers, possibly.
Greening Up My Act (55:54.528)
They do distribute, yeah. It goes to like their warehouses and stuff. Not all the time, but...
Kat (55:57.371)
Yeah, well that's another thing about shopping at like local thrift more local thrift stores that aren't chains is that you might get Better stuff if people you know, like the junior league Right or a church-based thrift store. You're gonna get what those people donate there. So
Greening Up My Act (56:01.846)
Mm-hmm. Yeah.
Greening Up My Act (56:09.632)
Yes. Yeah.
Mm-hmm. Yeah, totally. Cool. Well, that was it. An hour later.
Kat (56:18.758)
But yeah, well, OK, we're going to have to link to Luna in Blue Vintage. My friend Stephanie, I want to make sure that's her. I will send you that link. Just amazed. She's got a great eye and she just keeps fighting.
Greening Up My Act (56:24.322)
Yes, please.
Kat (56:36.752)
I will send you real, yeah, Luna and blue vintage. I will send this to you right now. she's got 2000 followers on Instagram. She's, she's doing a really good, really good job. But, yeah, so I went to middle school with her and high school and she's very smart and, she's helped me with a lot of stuff and I don't think she listens to this podcast, but maybe I'll send her this one.
Greening Up My Act (56:46.559)
nice. That's awesome.
Greening Up My Act (56:53.516)
Very cool.
Greening Up My Act (57:01.25)
Yeah, I do. Force her to become a listener.
Kat (57:04.196)
Yes, I'm like, guess what, we're talking about you and how good you are. But yeah.
Greening Up My Act (57:06.51)
Very cool. Awesome. Yeah, so that's all I had. One hour later. Yeah.
Kat (57:12.314)
Okay, well we still talk for an hour. Next week, the joy of coffee. Or the cry of coffee, yeah.
Greening Up My Act (57:18.346)
Yay slash cry. Yeah.
Kat (57:24.966)
The sad, sad story of upcoming coffee. Yeah. We're gonna talk about coffee. I have, I have thoughts. Cool. Well, thank you.
Greening Up My Act (57:27.534)
Okay, sweet. Okay, awesome. That sounds good. Well, yeah, thank you for listening. If you haven't already, subscribe to our Patreon because we have fun. We have more fun. We have fun here. We're a little loosey. We're a little more loosey goosey over there. So it's really fun.
Kat (57:44.88)
We have fun here, but I drink more.
Yeah, it's $5 a month and it helps us immensely. So thank you. Awesome.
Greening Up My Act (57:53.578)
It does, means so much. all right, cool. See you soon.
Kat (57:59.068)
Good night.
